ROBERT A.M. STERN, FAIA

Robert A.M. Stern Architects is a 330-person architecture, interior design, and landscape design firm based in New York with an extraordinarily diverse portfolio. In New York, its hometown, the firm has demonstrated unparalleled success with its residential buildings, including the record-setting 15 Central Park West, for Zeckendorf Development; 30 Park Place for Silverstein Properties in Downtown Manhattan; and on Manhattan's Upper East Side, the Chatham and the Brompton for Related. Outside of New York, the firm has designed successful residential apartment houses in Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, Toronto, Vancouver, Taipei, and Hong Kong. In all of its residential work, the firm applies lessons learned in the design of the very best custom single-family houses on which it first built its reputation; they remain at the heart of the practice.

The firm was founded in 1969 by Robert A.M. Stern, and Mr. Stern, Dean of the Yale School of Architecture since 1998, continues to lead the practice. He is one of the foremost historians of New York City, co-author of the highly acclaimed five-volume New York book series that documents the development of New York City’s architecture and urbanism, in addition to seventeen books that have been published on his work. Leading the design effort for 20 East End Avenue are Robert A.M. Stern, and RAMSA partners Paul L. Whalen and Michael D. Jones.

THE HAND OF THE ARCHITECT

Robert A.M. Stern is the preeminent scholar of early 20th century architecture. Stern’s designs are about perfecting a craft and embracing lessons learned through rigorous research and a study of the neighborhood’s context and history. A self-described “Modern Traditionalist,” Stern creates buildings that fit in seamlessly with their surroundings and give the impression they’ve been there forever.
